Our commercial breeding herd is a key arm of our business. We currently run 3500 commercial cows, which are utilised for breeding consistent high-performance cattle that can efficiently turn grass into beef.
Maternal strength is our focus, fertility, longevity and the high level of year-in-year-out performance. We expect our cows to calve unassisted, rear top calves and get back in calf every year.
The sires we use from our seedstock operation continue to add maternal strength and increase our carcass performance—increased yield, easy-doing cattle that can put down fat and increase marbling. Consistency of product is a crucial driver for our program.
We also utilise Artificial Insemination (AI), covering big numbers of cows. This allows us to use one or two bulls at a time, adding to the genetic and end-product consistency.
Our commercial operation is a unique place to collect data from many aspects of our cattle's performance and carcass data when the cattle are processed. This forms a major part of our decision-making process.
